Obama Reduces Arts Funding

This is an interesting commentary on President Obama cutting arts funding at a time when the nation’s arts community is suffering from the worst economic slump since the Great Depression. This is evident in all cultural life in the U.S., from slow or non-existent sales at small art galleries to the strangulation of major symphony orchestras because of plummeting ticket sales and diminishing endowments. The Honolulu Symphony recently declared bankruptcy and closed, and it appears the same fate awaits the Philadelphia Symphony.

Noteflight's A Bicycle Built for Two

Here is A Bicycle Built for Two

I think that this could be quite a useful tool for music education. It is easy enough for elementary students to use. I can see students learning to do a similar assignment and thus learning how to notate music using technology. The more advanced students could also learn to notate simple compositions that they have created. In my classes, as part of their final exam they are required to play a lead sheet. Perhaps they could learn to also notate the lead sheet through this notation program. It's exciting to think of all the different possibilities!
